In honor of fall…
(“they wash it, they wash it” is a comedy staple in my house)

Malbec Rose, $15.99. Very tasty, slightly sweet, dry finish. On its own, would be nice with a rich cheese and fruit plate.

An absolute bargain at $14.99, and a great example of good wines that can be found at sub-$20. Had a big, perfume-y body with lots of fruit notes. The finish was surprisingly clean for such a big wine. Had with seafood pasta and it made a nice match.

This was purchased as a cooking wine. Definitely kind of “meh”. Not much to write home about.

Name: Charmille des Gravieres
Year: 2007
Type: Red Bordeaux Wine
Price: $18
Purchased: Blue Streak Wines, Long Island City, June 2011
Notes: Label states “Soft on the palate with a subtle tannic structure on the finish. Aromas of black-currant, raspberry and more mature fruits such as plum and cherry.”
Personally, if this wine was “subtly tannic” when they first tasted it, I’ll french kiss my bulldog. Surprisingly tannic even now, it had a nice nose but an unexpectedly harsh finish. Would definitely buy again, especially if we were buying lamb…but, wouldn’t pay more than $12 a bottle unless I planned to use it as a wine-cellar investment. Could definitely benefit from a bit more aging.
